Once again, I modified my experiment procedure as after my classmate Lum Qianwei had seen and given me feedback on my procedure, I realised that I needed to record my observations down as the data collected in the form of the weight and the total surface area of the pieces of meat would not be able to completely and accurately tell me about the changes in the pieces of meat and the coca cola. I also realised that in my table I needed to not only show my data collected but calculate the changes in weight and total surface area.








My new procedure!
Step 1: Use the knife to cut out 2 pieces of chicken breast meat of approximately 1cmx2cmx2cm.
Step 2: Pour 250 ml of Coca Cola each into 2 bottles
Step 3: Pour 250 ml of Water each into 2 bottles
Step 4: steam 2 pieces of chicken meat of at least approximately 4cmx4cmx2cm just until they are cooked throughout
Step 5: Cut out 2 pieces of chicken meat measuring approximately 1cmx2cmx2cm from the cooked pieces of meat
Step 6: Using a ruler measure the dimensions of each of the pieces of meat and record down each of their total surface area
Step 7: Pat pieces of meat dry lightly using a paper towel to remove any excess liquid then, using a weighing scale weigh each piece of meat and record their masses down
Step 8: Place one piece of raw chicken meat into a bottle of Coca Cola and the other piece of raw chicken meat into a bottle of water
Step 9: Place one piece of steamed and cut chicken meat into a bottle of Coca Cola and the other piece of steamed chicken meat into a bottle of water
Step 10: Close the bottles using the bottle-caps
Step 11: Leave bottles in a shaded area of room temperature for 48 hours
Step 12: Observe the pieces of meat and the Coca Cola and record down observations
Step 13: remove pieces of meat from the bottles after 48 hours and weigh and measure them after patting pieces of meat dry lightly using a paper towel to remove any excess liquid 
Step 14: record data collected and organize data into a table calculating the change in weight and total surface area
Step 15: repeat steps 1-14 with pork meat
Step 16: repeat steps 1-15 once more

Effect of Coca Cola on meat experiment 1 draft 2

I made some changes to my experiment procedure as a felt that some parts of it could be improved on such as changing the cooking method of the chicken from boiling to steaming to reduce any water entering the pieces of meat during cooking through diffusion as this would affect my results obtained. I also changed the dimensions of the pieces of meat to be used in my experiment from 2cmx2cmx2cm to 1cmx2cmx2cm as I wanted to increase the surface area to volume ratio of the pieces of meat to enable more exposure of the pieces of meat to the Coca Cola. Thus as my procedure changed, so did the equipment I needed to use. Another part of my original procedure that I had to change was changing the cutting and measuring of the cooked pieces of meat from before they were cooked to after they were cooked. This is as I realized that the pieces of meat shrunk greatly when they were cooked, and shrunk at different rates. Thus cutting and measuring the pieces of meat before they were cooked would result in inaccurate results obtained due to pieces of meat of different sizes being used in my experiment. I also changed my procedure as a realized that some of the steps were not precise and clear enough thus I had to modify them.






My new procedure!

Step 16: repeat steps 1-12 with pork meat
Step 17: repeat steps 1-14 once more

Effect of Coca Cola on meat experiment 1 draft 1

1.     What do you want to find out? (Aim/Purpose/Research question)
What is the effect of Coca Cola on raw and cooked meat within the time frame of 48 hours?

2.    What is the tentative explanation of your research question? (Hypothesis)
If raw or cooked meat is placed in Coca Cola for a span of 48 hours, the meat will not be dissolved by the Coca Cola by the end of the experiment.

3.    In an investigation, there is only one variable to be changed. Which variable will you change in this investigation? (Independent Variable)
Presence of coca cola

4.    All the other variables must be kept constant. What are a few important variables that will affect the results greatly? (Controlled Variables)
·      amount of liquid in each container
·       approximate size of each piece of meat
·      temperature of surrounding
·       temperature of liquid
·      relative shape of container(as long as the pieces of meat are able to be completely covered with Coca Cola with 250ml of Coca Cola, the shape does not matter)
·      type of meat used
·      place where bottles are placed
·      whether meat is cooked or raw

5.    What results will you measure? (Dependent Variable)
Weight and total surface area of pieces of meat at the end of 48 hours

7.    What are the steps that you will take to carry out the investigation? (Procedure)
Step 1: Use the knife to cut out 4 pieces of chicken breast meat of approximately 2cmx2cmx2cm.
Step 2: Pour 250 ml of Coca Cola each into 2 bottles
Step 3: Pour 250 ml of Water each into 2 bottles
Step 5: boil 2 pieces of the cut chicken meat
Step 6: Using a ruler measure the area of each of the pieces of meat and record down
Step 7: Using a weighing scale weigh each piece of meat and record their masses down
Step 8: Place one piece of raw chicken meat into a bottle of Coca Cola and the other piece of raw chicken meat into a bottle of water
Step 9: Place one piece of boiled chicken meat into a bottle of Coca Cola and the other piece of boiled chicken meat into a bottle of water
Step 10: Leave bottles in a shaded area of room temperature for 48 hours
Step 11: remove pieces of meat from the bottles after 48 hours and weigh and measure them
Step 12: record data collected and organize data into a table
Step 13: repeat steps 1-12 with pork meat
Step 14: repeat steps 1-14

8.    How are data collected? (Data collection)
Data is collected using a weighing scale as well as a ruler and calculator. The weighing scale enables me to know the mass of the pieces of meat while the ruler and calculator enable me to know the total surface area of the pieces of meat. The pieces of meat are weighed before and after the experiment, after which the two weights are compared. Any change in the weights of the meat will enable me to find out if Coca Cola has an effect on the weight of the meat. The pieces of meat are also measured with a ruler after which their total areas are calculated with a calculator before and after the experiment. This enables me to compare the areas of the pieces of meat before and after the experiment to find any change in them. This will enable me to find the effect of Coca Cola on the area of the pieces of meat. 

Rough experimental plan 1

1) Research and read up on acids used in Coca Cola, as well as on rumors of what Coca Cola is able to do to meat and the reasons behind these beliefs.
2) Plan and edit experiment 1 (What is the effect of Coca Cola on raw and cooked meat within a time frame of 48 hours?)
3) Conduct experiment 1, organise data and analyze and conclude based on data collected
4) Plan and edit experiment 2 (Is the low pH of Coca Cola what causes this effect?)
5) Conduct experiment 2, organise data and analyze and conclude based on data collected
6) Write final report

Experiment question 4

4th experiment question: what is the effect of coke on cooked and raw meat in the short span of 24-48 hours (this is because most rumors state that coke can dissolve meat during this time frame). Isit the low pH of the Coca Cola that causes this effect(a lot of sources believe that coke is able to dissolve meat because of the phosphoric acid in it that gives it its low pH)

- this experiment question was chosen and my experiment was conducted based on this :)

Experiment question 3


3rd experiment question: What is the effect of coke on meat? And what causes this effect?

Reasons why this experiment question is unsuitable

- it is too hard to test what causes the effect coke has on meat because there are too many components in coke to test within my given time frame. Also what is the time frame of my experiment?(I decided on 48 hours since most rumors state that coke is able to dissolve meat within this time frame)
